The 2013 Weekend, scheduled May 24 through the 26th, promises to be even better than the last one. In addition to Jerry Story headlining the event, and Bob Asp and Dave Sutter adding their own unique talents in square dance calling, this year the round dancing will be provided by not one but two cuers … the husband and wife team of Mike and Edie Kirsch from Minnesota.

Friday night at River City Square Dance Weekend featured 35+ squares, dancing to Jerry Story, Bob Asp and Dave Sutter.

As usual, the weekend of dancing was in the Dubuque County Fairground Grand Ballroom.

The web site of the Dubuque area Telegraph Herald newspaper, TH Online, covered the 2011 River City Square Dance, currently in its 13th year. The article included several quotes from organizer Bob Ellis, as well as from renowned caller Jerry Story.

There was a feeling that the dance floor at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds on Saturday morning was the scene of a challenge; Story’s voice calling out movements was literally keeping people on their toes.

“It’s great exercise both mentally and physically because they have to keep their wits about them all the time, because it’s extemporaneous and they don’t know what I’m going to say,” said Story, who travels the country performing as a square dance caller.
